International Symposium on Greening and Upgrading Small Hydropower for Eco-environment Restoration Held in Lishui with Success

---Sponsored by Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology, Ministry of Water Resources (MWR), P.R. China, and co-organized by National Research Institute for Rural Electrification, MWR and Lishui Municipal Government, International Symposium on Greening and Upgrading Small Hydropower for Eco-environment Restoration was held successfully from May 7th to 8th in Lishui, Zhejiang Province. Leaders from different departments attended and addressed the opening ceremony, including Mr. Li Ge, Deputy Director General of Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology, MWR, Mr. Yue Menghua, Director of Department of Rural Water and Hydropower, MWR, Mr. Jiang Ruhua, Deputy Director General of Department of Water Resources of Zhejiang Province, Mr. Yang Xiuqing, Deputy Mayor of Lishui Municipal Government, and Mr. Li Yun, Deputy President of Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute, etc. Mr. Xu Jincai, Director General of National Research Institute for Rural Electrification, presided over the opening ceremony.

The symposium is one part of Sustainable Hydropower Use and Integration in China and Europe (SHUI-ChE), a partnering program under China Europe Water Platform. It aims at in-depth exchange and discussion on topics including Regulatory Framework and Green Standards on SHP, Environmental Mitigation and Upgrading for SHP, and Strategic Tools for Balancing Multiple Goals/Interests. Representatives from Department of Rural Water and Hydropower of MWR, Water Resources Bureau of Lishui, International Center for Small Hydropower (ICSHP), Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute, Changjiang River Scientific Research Institute of Changjiang Water Resources Commission, National Research Institute for Rural Electrification of MWR, Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (SwAM), University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Austria, Stockholm Environment Institute, Sweden, University of Florence (UNIFI), Italy, and Vorarlberger Illwerke Corporation, Austria, etc. respectively delivered their speeches on the symposium. Besides, the symposium attendees also visited Dayang Reservoir, Panxi First-cascade Hydropower Station, and an ecologically restored river system in Jinyun County.

Attendees of the symposium also include representatives from "Belt and Road" countries of Laos, Thailand, Uganda, Guyana, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, etc., who are working in the hydro and energy field and participants of Training Course on Small Hydropower Technology for Lancang-Mekong Countries organized by National Research Institute for Rural Electrification. The information and technology exchange in this symposium will promote the sustainable development of small hydropower in "Belt and Road" countries, thus jointly advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.(2019-05-17)
